Exams and Academic Standing:
Every subject in the Introductory Course includes a midterm exam and a final examination.
The student can make up for one midterm exam if they have been absent from it or failed it with a grade below 4 (four).
In foreign language programs, the following exams must be passed:
• 1 (one) oral and written midterm exam in Foreign Language, both exams being disqualifying, and
• 1 (one) written midterm exam in Spanish Language.
In Spanish programs, the following exams must be passed:
• 1 (one) written midterm exam in Spanish Grammar, and
• 1 (one) written midterm exam in the Reading and Writing Workshop.
Student In Good Standing (IGS): those students who pass the midterm exam with 4, 5 or 6 attain good standing in the subject and must then sit for the final examination. In Spanish, these students are called regulares. After attaining good standing in the subject, the student will be able to enroll in first year subjects as an IGS student. Not until they have passed the final examination of the prerequisite Introductory Course subjects will they be able to take the final examination of the first year subjects.
Exempt from Final Exam (EFFE) Students: those students who pass the midterm exam with a 7 (seven) o higher become exempt from sitting for the subject’s final examination. In Spanish, these students are called promocionales. These students will be able to enroll in first‑year subjects as IGS or EFFE students. EFFE students who do not qualify for final exam-exemption must sit for the subject’s final examination.
External students: those students who do not pass the midterm exam, its make-up or the final examination during the Introductory Course will only be able to sit for the final examination as “external” students at different sessions between the end of the Introductory Course and December. Otherwise, they will have to retake the Introductory Course once again the following year. In Spanish, external students are called libres. At the same time, they will not be able to enroll in first year annual subjects, nor will they be able to take first-semester subjects.
Please notice: The Introductory Course subjects are prerequisites for their related first year subjects. This means that a) the students must attain good standing during the Introductory Course in order to enroll in and take first year subjects, and b) they must pass Introductory Course subjects in order to be allowed to complete a first year subject (whether by passing its final examination as an IGS student or having been exempt from said examination as a EFFE student) In the Spanish program, students have to attain good academic standing in, or pass, both subjects in order to take the first year subjects. |
To gradually introduce students to first year subjects and help them attain the required level of linguistic competence to start their undergraduate program.
Objectives by subject:
